Fun Things to do in Indianapolis

Posted by searchcarmelhomes under Carmel, Happenings, Hot Spots

Sure the Super Bowl is in Indianapolis this week and there is plenty to do downtown with the NFL experience and Super Bowl Village with free concerts, the zipline and the hamster wheel!  But Indianapolis and the surrounding communities like Carmel always has so much to do.Indianapolis

Bruce Hornsby will be performing at the Palladium on February 17th; you might remember him playing with the Grateful Dead and Ricky Skaggs. His most memorable hit was "The Way It Is".

Have you ever seen a play at the Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre? Legally Blonde (or Bend and Snap) will be there beginning February 16th through April 6th as a Musical.

We mentioned this last month; but Micahel Jackson : THE IMMORTAL World Tour with Cirque Du Soleil is at Conseco Fieldhouse on February 24th-25th.

For kids, Clifford the Big Red Dog will be LIVE at Clowes Memorial Hall on February 29th (guess it’s a leap year this year!).

The Children’s Museum has the Adventures of Mr. Potato Head beginning January 28th through May 6th.  This series has interactive explorations undersea, in out space and in the jungle.  It is probably most appropriate for kids between 3 and 8 years of age.

It is also a great time to look at the homes for sale in Carmel!  Inventory continues to be high and interest rates continue to be low.  Our team holds three to four homes open each Sunday, send me a quick email if you would like to get a list each week.

The Palladium in Carmel  has enjoyed great success with its many shows and concerts.   Here is an update of what is coming soon to the Palladium.Palladium Music

August 20th Lyle Lovett

August 27th Martin Short

September 24th Jazz at the Lincoln Center & Wynton Marsalis

October 13th Mary Chapin Carpenter

October 16th Chinese Acrobats

If you want to enjoy an evening out without traveling to downtown Indianapolis; this is a great choice.

I was out showing homes for sale in Carmel last week and kept going by the Palladium; my inspiration for this post.   Most of these were townhomes; but how great to own a home in the area and be able to walk to such great entertainment.

I also got a chance to see the apartments along Main street…the development on the Southside of the street near Muldoons enjoys a 98% occupancy rate; that’s wild success!

The Carmel Arts District is alive and well!

Have you ever wondered who is responsible for those real life statues at work andStatues in the Carmel Arts District play in the Carmel Arts District?

John Seward Johnson II (aka J. Seward Johnson Jr) is the artist that created these lifelike statues.

He is the grandson of Robert Wood Johnson (co-founder of Johnson & Johnson) and first cousin of actor Michael Douglas.   J. Seward actually worked for Johnson & Johnson until he was fired in 1962.

These statues mimic the daily happenings of life; from shopping to water plants to playing with kids and also includes the infamous Unconditional Surrender pose of the sailor kissing the young nurse in pure joy that WWII was officially over!

There are probably a dozen that can be found as you are walking through the Carmel Arts District; you can see a man reading the newspaper, a women carrying groceries, a policemann directing traffic, parents playing with their kids and more.

There are some great neighborhoods in Carmel that are within walking distance of the Arts District including Monon and Main, Arden Townhomes and the Commons at City Center.   There is also a cottage type home development that will be built soon as well.

Carmel Indiana is a great place to live because  of it’s convenient location, great schools and sought after homes; but also because of all the events available to the area residents.Jazz

We have already covered the Carmel Palladium Concert Series in a previous post, but let’s talk about the live  Jazz on the Monon concerts!   They are held on Saturday nights from 6-9 p.m. on the SW corner of the Monon and Main Street.

It is similar to the Symphony on the Prairie events in Fishers, in that you bring your own chairs/blankets and spread out to enjoy the music.

This Saturday, the 25th, you can enjoy Monika Herzig  and on July 23rd you can enjoy the Splinter Group and on July 30th it will be the Slammer Jazz Quartet and the final show will feature Blair Clark on August 6th.

There are lots of other events in Carmel; so be sure to visit this blog often and check out our easy search for home in Carmel tools too!

We’ve spent the last few posts on the Carmel Real Estate market, so let’s spend a few talking about some great events in Carmel.   The Taste of the Chamber is January 20th from 4:30 to 7:00 at the Ritz Charles off of Meridian at 12156 N Meridian Street.   The phone number for the Ritz is 317-846-9158.   This is the 10th annual for this event, so very successful!Carmel Arts District

There are going to be some great restaurants participating including A2Z Cafe, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Chef Suzanne Catering, the Glass Chimney, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Vine and Table (yes, there will be wine and beer!).

Pricing is $5.00 for Chamber members and $10.00 if not.

It will be a fabulous evening for tasting a sampling of the fine foods and wines, socializing and networking.

Another great event will be a the Carmel Palladium!   Did you know they added another show for Vince Gill?   His second performance will be on March 22 (the 23rd is already sold out!).   Gill has received 18 CMA Awards and 19 Grammy Awards.   Get your tickets at the Center for Performing Arts site.

I have written about the Monon Center and wanted to highlight the actual Monon Trail today.   The Trail begins at 10th street in Indianapolis and travels all the way to 161st street in Westfield (the end point used to be 146th but this was recently expanded).   Monon Trail at 96th Street

The Monon in Carmel is 5.2 miles; but all total, it is 16 miles of pavement used for biking, walking, running and rollerblading.

There is parking and restrooms at 96th street and at Rohrer Road just south of 146th in Carmel.

It is very easy to reach other venues.   Downtown, for example, to reach Mass Ave shopping, take the south end of trail and turn west on 10th street and then south on Bellefontaine.   If you want to go to the Zoo or White River State Park use St. Clair Street.

It is easy to get to Clay Terrace in Carmel also, it is 1/4 mile east of the Monon on 146th street.

Another great route if you are not up for a long hike, is to park at 96th street and walk down to 86th where you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants down there.

They are working to have the Monon Trail connect to Cool Creek Park Trail and also to the Cultural Trail downtown.

The Monon is just one of the many features that Carmel Real Estate residents enjoy and why so many people looking for homes for sale in Carmel locate here.

All the residents in Carmel and the surrounding area have been watching the Carmel Palladium being built.   It has been touted as the crown jewel of old town Carmel.Carmel Palladium

It cost about $150 million and has used limestone from Indiana in its construction. It is about 85 feet from floor to dome and speaking of the floors, they are Italian stone.   There are 65 glass panels and the Palladium seats 1600 in the concert hall.   There is also a 500 seat proscenium theater and a 200 seat studio theater.

The new concert series is out and has five distinct series as follows:

  1. Classics
  2. Great American Songbook
  3. Jazz Roots
  4. Country
  5. Dance

In the Classic series, you can see the Viena Boys Choir on March 5th, Kronos Quartet on April 17th or the Cleveland Orchestra on May 22nd.

In the Songbook series, Marvin Hamlisch opens on March 20th and Debby Boone from “You Light Up my Life” fame appears on April 15th and Glen Campbell is on June 4th.

Jazz Roots opens with Jazz Meets Gospel on February 19th along with 3 Generations of Divas on March 26th.   David Sanborn is at the Palladium on May 20th with Super Sax.

The Dance Series has Tango Buenos Aires on March 16th and Savion Glover on April 1st.

In the Country series (probably my favorite) is Vince Gill on March 24th, the Wright Brothers on April 9th, Clint Black on June 17th.

The Center for Performing Arts will serve as a museum and educational center by day and a concert hall by night.   It will be exciting when it opens in January.

There is quite a bit of Carmel Real Estate for sale near the new Center for Performing Arts if being within walking distance is in your future.   :-)

I spent a great deal of my Real Estate activities with out of town buyers.   I usually give a tour that covers Geist Reservoir, Clay Terrace, The Monon Center/Trail, Conner Prairie, Broad Ripple, Meridian Kessler and of course, most of downtown.   I try to go by Mass Ave, Conseco, Lucas Oil Stadium, White River State Park, Victory Field and more.   It typically takes several hours but when I am finsihed the usual reaction is, “we had no idea there was this much to see and do in the Indianapolis area!”

So that got me thinking that a video might be a way to introduce people to our  wonderful city.   I would like to do one specific to Carmel next; let me know if you’d like to help with that project!

Here is the video of Indy, let me know what you think.

Since this is a Carmel Indiana Real Estate blog, I probably should give you the current stats!   As of today, there are 744 homes for sale in Carmel Indiana and there are 130 condo’s for sale.
